Provides an overview of the contributing factors and features of schizophrenia. Discusses the when and how of a schizophrenia diagnosis, along with an overview of related disorders, associated diagnoses, and complications.

This is part 1 of a 3-part series on serious mental illness and evidenced-based practices for volunteer supporters.

Per updates in Senate Bill 27, as of January 1, 2026, bipolar I disorder with psychotic features, except psychosis related to intoxication, is an eligible diagnosis. This training has been updated to reflect this update. For more information, see the Senate Bill 27 brief.
