This training will provide an overview of the referral process for statutory CARE referrals from Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) designated facilities and court referrals, as well as referrals from community partners and family members. The open-forum will include a panel discussion on current processes and successful strategies that can be replicated by county behavioral health (BH) agencies.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will have an increased ability to:

  • Explain the difference between petitioning and referring.
  • Understand components of referrals for potential CARE respondents.
  • Identify differences in referral processes for various system and community partners.
  • Describe how counties may process and respond to CARE referrals.
