This training will provide context on the CARE process for first responders, including the role of the first responders in CARE, collaboration with county BH, etc. First responders include peace officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, mobile crisis response workers, and homeless outreach workers.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will have an increased ability to:

  • Understand unique aspects of CARE, including process, eligibility, potential petitioners, and the range of services included in a CARE agreement/CARE plan.
  • Understand petitioning as a first responder.
  • Employ best practices when interacting with the CARE population, including leveraging psychiatric advance directives and embracing a trauma-informed approach.

Important Information

This training is primarily targeted for first responders and behavioral health agencies. That said, the content may be relevant for other stakeholder groups involved in the CARE Act implementation process.

The subsequent open forum discussion is intended for BH agencies and first responders to ask questions, discuss topics needing clarification, and to share ideas and thoughts among county team members.
