February 2026 – Success Story

A Journey to CARE Graduation in Kern County

Kern County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services share that one individual was referred to the CARE process last year by a concerned family member. At the time of initial engagement, the participant was hospitalized and experiencing severe symptoms, creating a challenging start to their CARE journey. Through steady outreach and authentic relationshipbuilding, the CARE team was able to establish trust and, ultimately, form a CARE agreement—an important milestone given the participant’s early instability and a period spent on an involuntary psychiatric hold after making threats to others.

As the process unfolded, the CARE participant demonstrated significant resilience. Despite the difficulties they faced, they consistently rose to meet expectations and showed that meaningful change is possible even during periods of crisis. Following the establishment of the CARE agreement, they achieved notable accomplishments, including increased independence and successfully completing the CARE court process. Their connections with family members have remained strong, and that support has been a steady anchor throughout their progress.

County staff report that the growth has been deeply inspiring. Over time, the CARE participant has gained stability, strengthened their support network, and improved their overall quality of life. Their experience stands as an example of what can happen when persistence, courage, and supportive relationships come together. Those who have worked with them share that witnessing their recovery has been profoundly moving, and they remain optimistic about the CARE participant’s continued wellbeing and future success.
